Joe, I completely agree with your comments on what it takes as an older athlete to be competitive and achieve personal goals. When people ask me, a 65 year old attempting his first Ironman, "are you crazy? How do you find the time?". I tell them "I can't find the time, I make the time." And your point that your athletes had to make significant changes to their lifestyles is certainly true for me. While I enjoy my work, my wife and family, I know that I must manage my lifestyle and my training to become competitive by planning and committing to a training schedule and tracking all of my metrics.

I began my journey with some research and a DNF for my first Olympic distance race last year. Under trained, unprepared, self coached.I was disappointed but not discouraged, and I doubled down by committing to a full season of races and training. Finished this year with two 70.3s 5 Olympics, and I signed up for Ironman Santa Rosa to begin my pursuit of my ultimate goal, healthy and strong and to reach Ironman Kona.

I am fortunate to have a great team supporting me on my quest, and lots of data to help me optimize and maximize my training, nutrition, rest and recovery. I track sleep as closely as I track my other data in Training Peaks, with the goal of staying healthy, and fast after 65.

Thanks for you perspective and advice, online here and in your books.
